I am very happy if people will negotiate what other rules they would need to want to participate as well as to clarify where they want diferent contant at the mother webs. The main web system I use costs $35 a year per web so its not difficult to imagine that major cties will also want to set up their own branch web or of course a free blog - either of which we will happily linmk from the top of the mother web.

How do we classify thematic project areas of humanitarian endeavour? Am I correct in assuming there is no standard of the same sort that industry statistics are broken down into several hundred sectors and perhaps 30 mega-groupings? If so, can the development of the project30000 catalogue offer an independent bonus?: permitting any worldwide concern network to crosscheck how its project applications areas mix and match with another network's development foci.?

Where would we look to see which project application areas subnetworks are convening around. Ashoka now has about 15 identified group interests which its 2000 social entrepreneurs identify with one or more of. You can start to see what that list is at www.changemakers.net . Its not complete but if it interested enough people here, I am confident I could get Ashoka to tell us what they have so far identified. As well as effectively cataloguing theory 2000 entrepreneurs by application interest, knowledge of how grassroots up sustainability in any particular context application area involves different intelligences than those who have only mapped how do you do eg health from top-down's standard ways of classifying is being developed and at www.changemakers.net this is shared wherever you come across the keyword mosaic.

The smart commons mosaic for water is a particular favourite of mine but perhaps because a few years ago some of us came up with the pair of questions: is there an atlas of the world with red spots wherever there are water problems and how many different legend codes would be needed to catalogue every type of redspot problem. Although water could be taught as the mother of all geographic systems, we find no evidence that such a map exists in a simple way to navigate round, and we find too many top down experts have different vocabularies which to the layman overlap but which the experts seem unable to transparently translate into profiling what project is first needed where.

The changemakers.net model is sound with the way it is building up mosaics of experience based on at least 100 social entrpreneurs who share the same application area and have met over the 28 years that the meta-network ashoka has been connecting them - it will be a world uniter one day; look at the judges for the health for all project round that took place march to may (and NB almost another 150 projects for the 30000 bank!)

I realise that a lot of social entrepreneur effort has been put into ensuring the grassroots up flow of projects needs unlike the trafditional western global NGO that is still organsied around what administrators in rich countries plan, fund etc. However recent;y Ashoka has recognised there's a gap that yopung people everywhere want to fill and this means developing youthventure hubs in west as well as east, north as well as south. This requires an integration atlas all of its own

I still dont quite understand how one makes a nomination for people or arenas that desperately need to be included in SE, and more generally what sort of collaboratuve work all clubofcity web-loggers can do in helping to integrate the world atlases of SE

BACKGROUND
Our World is divided and conflict-torn, socially and ecologically unsustainable. We cannot remain as we are, nor can we go back to the conditions of the past. We can only move forward, but not on the same path we have been following till now. We need to find a new direction for our individual and collective future in individual and collective interest. Finding a new path is a major challenge, but it can be met.
The Global Symposium therefore aims to meet these challenges and its main objectives are to:
foster personal interaction, understanding and action for a strong foundation of a nuclear-free, democratic, sustainable, just and peaceful world order by bringing together Nobel Laureates, youth working towards world unity & world peace, international institutions, civil society organizations, and global and local leaders.
create a widespread awareness about issues like scarcity of safe drinking water, reform of governmental and corporate structures, more equitable distribution of resources, development of renewable energy programs and encourage dialogue to replace international conflict for achieving a breakthrough towards a sustainable future.
assemble the innovative ideas and creative experiences of non-governmental and international organizations and all sectors of civil society and articulate a vision for the future that recognizes the fundamental interdependence of humanity and suggests ways to move forward towards a New World Order.
draft a joint declaration approved unanimously (or by majority) in order to create a guideline for a joint action plan. The various teams in the Symposium will work together to draft a declaration to save the Future of the Earth, the Future of the Humanity and the Future of Oneself (individuals).
act on all these suggestions above and constitute a BREAKTHROUGH 2007 team. BREAKTHROUGH 2007 team will be constituted as a group of active youth thinkers who will come together at Global Symposium in December 2005 and through joint effort, coordination and networking will endeavour to awaken planetary consciousness for a New World Order.
The Global Symposium is an ongoing project that aims to develop global partnership with youth and civil society organizations to establish sustainable development, world unity and peace. The various teams in the Symposium worked together to draft a declaration and work on an action plan to save the Future of the Earth, Humanity and the Future of Oneself.
ACTION PLAN
Moving towards New World Order:
1) The 2005 Global Symposium resulted in a draft declaration to create a joint action plan for establishing Breakthrough 2007 team and 15 Regional Chapters that will develop Regional Partnership Agenda (RPA) identifying regional threats and challenges to be met. This draft declaration is being circulated to the partners of GPWD for their inputs.
2) In 2006, we aim to establish 15 Regional Chapters worldwide that will work upon the Regional Partnership Agenda (RPA) and will organize Conferences during 2006-2007 across the globe. A reference document will be drawn on the conceptual and methodological basis from the standpoint of civil society. This reference document will be known as the Global Partnership Agenda (GPA), which will evolve during the regional conferences to address regional and global problems, their solutions and action plan. We are inviting proposal from organizations to serve as Regional initiators in the following 15 regions of the world, namely: 1) Eastern & Central Africa, 2) Southern Africa, 3) West Africa, 4) Latin America & the Caribbean, 5) North America, 6) South Asia, 7) The Pacific, 8) Southeast Asia, 9) Northeast Asia, 10) Central Asia, 11) Middle East and North Africa, 12) Western Commonwealth of Independent States, 13) The Caucasus, 14) The Balkans, 15) Northern and Western Europe
3) The Regional Conferences will conclude with a Global Conference resulting in wide acceptance of the Global Partnership Agenda. A Global Action Plan (GAP) will be drawn based on the Global Partnership Agenda and will be presented to the UN Secretary General and all Heads of State & Government with a petition to convene a Global Meeting.
4) A Global Meeting based on Article 109 of the UN Charter at United Nations Headquarters will further result in commitments from civil society organizations to get the GAP endorsed and acted upon by all Governments, Corporate bodies, civil societies and individuals. We aim to hold this meeting sometime from January and March 2008.
BREAKTHROUGH 2007:
To achieve a sustainable future, we need a new way of thinking that can make a difference. The shape of tomorrow will be decided by how we think today. BREAKTHROUGH 2007 team has been constituted as a group of active youthful thinkers who came together at Global Symposium in December 2005 and through joint effort, coordination and networking will endeavor to awaken planetary consciousness for a New World Order by December 2007. I was lucky enough to see her kick off Collapsing World in 2003- in my view the most extraodinary network developed by ordinary people until you can link me in to a deeper one. Hemisphere Peer Circles –why we use this name for our main projects section on Open Learning for all Ages?

Do we learn from each year’s crop of humankind every year that they learn from 10 up? What channels or spaces does the world have for listening to these growing people’s inquiries and imaginations? Contextually: each represents over 2% of action learning power of our species- how wholly do we respect let alone honour these new searching inputs? Will google help or hinder in improving transparency of answers to this question.

Why start from 10? We don’t have to; we could start from first grade of age 7. What we do need to do if we have learnt anything from the knowledge of emotional intelligence is that we ought start from a pre-pubescent age because that is when transparent self-confidence to question most needs planting. And to have rehearsed how each open age’s learning conversations worked so that eg by 10 that peer group is confident the world is listening. An example of such a rehearsal: each one of London’s 400 BeTheChangers of 2004 was given a personalised letter written by 7 year olds raising some questions on the world they would most like to see. The one I got was just as humanly sensible to my mind as any letter on a similar subject I have received from an adult. By all means when you are age 10 or under, facilitation by caring parents or teachers matters. But we do mean of the questions that peer group wants to ask not what some bureaucratic curriculum believes you need to be examined on like a cage of parrots. At least one of the 365 days in a 10 year old’s year could jam together the questions of the world they way we see them.

What would 2005 have learnt before 2005 if hemisphere peer groups had been up and openly networking. Would Queen Elisabeth have spent her Christmas message to the commonwealth asking iof humanity was turning on itself? We suggest that Britain 7/7 and France and Australia and other places where pockets of youth cultures rioted or terrified us would not have been our first warning signals that such nations are not as deeply culturally integrated as they liked to hope. We suspect this would have been clear in how the class of 95s were raising different questions from the class of 90s from the class of 85s in such hemispheres. Now that all these countries citizens from 10 up have online access it’s a tragedy we don’t have hemisphere peer groups more urgently being formed. To put this another way, once co-editors of project30000 have got over the initial shocking of connecting through this weblog, our next shocking conversation is that we hope the second wave of project30000 co-produced between 2010-2015 will make this first weblog look as primitive as the stone age

The Intergenerational Magic of 1 3 5 7 and 21
In demanding that the world knows how it can openly learn from its 10 or 21 year old hemispheres, naturally we want to learn for other time-bands. Let’s credit Bill Gates for focusing us on the 3,5,7 year bands. Bill says that change which happens in 3 years is usually underwhelming compared with forecasts and change that happens in 7 years wholly outside what was expected. This confirms that communal action learning itself is on exponentials, and 5 year bands are as convenient as any one number to remind us of the inflection points. Put another way whilst every 12 year old will correctly tell you they are very different from 10 year olds, the cultural and environmental influence on 10 to 12 year olds can be expected to be similar where that conditioning the boundaries of a third of a generation’s experience 10-16 or 17-23, or 24-30 can be predicted to be wholly different in some ways. Do our educational dare to iteratively ask which these critical differences are? Is there any possibility that these changes in a networked globe of localities are not going to get greater every 7 year leap into the 21st C.

And now for the not so good news - why Century 21 was our last innings.
The vast majority of mathematical or societal system thinkers from Buckminster Fuller on forecast that unless we improve open learning to a higher order of systemic integrity representing all our diversities, then century 21 is humankind’s last one. So if you are 40 plus –and even if you live your life in a boardroom or extracting moonshine from brussel sprouts as a 21st C Gulliver would see in travelling past much EU funding - YOU could be just as interested in enabling 10 year and up hemisphere peers as every other age group.

If you think that’s an over-optimistic question, it interests me that Chief Justices have been doing that annual checking in at Lucknow for 6 years now. I do wonder why the BBC as world’s largest public broadcaster doesn’t even devote one hour a year to what this fascinating peer exchange’s latest action learning debriefs are.

unfortunately, in some countries this most basic freedom of speech right - the safety to question what the country's most powerful media is doing internally or externalising globally -has got lost over the 20th Century. This is where corruption begins and transparency dies. The last quarter of 2005 has positioned the Water Portfolio for significant growth in 2006. We are pleased to announce that we have received a four-year, $3.9 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to support the provision of safe and affordable water and sanitation services to underserved populations in the developing world. Acumen Fund will use the grant to establish a mechanism for financing market-based water and sanitation projects in countries such as India, Pakistan and South Africa. The Water and Sanitation Funding Facility will provide loan guarantees and technical assistance to enable access to commercial finance for projects that serve low-income populations. This will allow local communities, entrepreneurs and financial institutions to take an active role in addressing water and sanitation challenges. This grant will also allow us to increase the capacity of the Water Portfolio team, and to engage financial institutions as partners in the challenge to deliver safe and affordable water to the bottom of the pyramid. Early in 2006, Acumen Fund Portfolio Manager Yasmina Zaidman, Country Manager Varun Sahni and COO David Kyle will visit India to secure key banking partners, recruit an Associate for the Water Facility, and identify top investment prospects. We also continue to focus on supporting our current portfolio of investments, and have seen some important progress in their development:

Heritage entered into formal agreements with the local municipality for a guaranteed water supply, and will launch their first installations of water storage systems for 500 families in mid-January.
Safe and Affordable Drinking Water — A global franchise model to make safe drinking water available to the poor WaterHealth International (WHI) has completed installation of the treatment system at its second pilot site and established 20 systems for tsunami-affected areas of Sri Lanka, serving more than 20,000 tsunami survivors. With a completed business plan in hand, WHI is expanding its operations in India, and has recruited top local managers to lead this effort.
Low-Cost Drip Irrigation — An innovative and affordable design for farmers in India International Development Enterprises (India)’s for-profit sales arm, Global Easy Water Products (GEWP), has reached over 11,000 farmers since Acumen Fund’s investment, and has expanded its dealer network to 160 dealers. where Livingstone's Spirit lives on today

We find inspiration in the stories and the newtork links through time all the way back to Livingstone. Perhaps they also provide clues on local networks to get in contact with. Anyway that's why you will see a links track to Livingstone stories in the right hand column of this blog. The first of which is the content of this bookmark

Livingstone's companions Susi and Chuma have been written about who trekked 11 months to take the body of the explorer Livingstone back to the Tanganyika, now Tanzania, coast after his death on May the 1st 1873.

David Livingstone first came to Africa in 1841 and established many schools and hospitals.

There is an aspect of this story that is overlooked each time it is related. In the 1850's there were 6 slaves rescued in the East African waters by the Royal Navy. The slaves were taken to Nasik Mission, which was about 100 miles from Bombay, and there they were brought up with a "British" education and disciplines. The latter included cricket. The six were Mathew Wellington, Benjamin Rutton, Richard Rutton, Mabruki and Jacob Wainright.

Chengwimbe was of Yao tribe of Nyasaland now Malawi and re-christened at Nasik Mission to be called Mathew Wellington. Mathew Wellington as a freed slave had employment in India embalming bodies. The group of 6 was called the "Bombayans" and were later returned to Kenya. The group returned to the CMS Mission at Freretown and whilst at the mission were recruited there on Stanley's instigation, to take stores and medical supplies to Tabora where Livingstone waited with his party. This relief party reached Livingstone and joined his safari when on August the 21st he set off for Lake Bangwendu. It was a long trek through the worst of weather conditions for 6 months. By now the missionary was so ill he was carried in a litter and so the expedition arrived at the Ilala district near a village named after its Chief: Chitambo.

Here Livingstone died. After 3 days of mourning it was decided to embalm the body and carry it to the coast. Carrus Farrar and a Swahili named Farjalla removed the heart and viscera. The removed parts were put into a tin and buried under a tree. The embalming was left to Mathew Wellington and as his Great Grandson said, "that preserving bodies was an art completely unknown to Africans, as they had fears of dead bodies and would not preserve them". The process of pickling the body with brandy, salt and the sun maturing took Mathew Wellington 15 days to preserve the body. The body was finally wrapped with sailcloth for transportation. Mathew Wellington's Great Great Grandson was still living in Mombasa in 1981 and is called Hedley Douglas Mokwena.

In February 1884 the 60 men transporting Livingstone's body, reached Bagamoyo after an incredible journey through rivers, swamps, desert and hostile territory. The Livingstone's body with the attendant Mathew Wellington were carried by a RN warship to Zanzibar, where later Livingstone's body was transshipped to London, to be buried and put to rest in Westminster Cathedral.

Mathew Wellington was rescued by another missionary and brought from Zanzibar to the CMS Mission in Freretown, adjacent to Mombasa Island in Kenya, where he married and had children.

The Friends of Mathew Wellington were a Westminster Cathedral English Church group that collected funds to support Mathew in his old age.

The CMS Mission in Freretown rang its bell every time the slavers left Mombasa Island to warn all to hide.

My Father was engaged to the Missionaries daughter (Mary Rambley), who cared for Mathew Wellington, for 7 years.

July 16 1929 the Kenya Government was not sympathetic to a suggestion that Mathew Wellington who was the last surviving link with Dr. Livingstone should now receive a state pension to relieve his practically destitute situation. The Chief Native Commissioner said Wellington had never been a Government servant and was not entitled to be maintained by public funds!

Somalia

The relationship and research contacts made on behalf of the people and women of Somalia by Dr Shamis Ismail Hussein are extraordinary. We met her in Delhi Dec 04 giving testimony to the annual gathering of the Global Reconciliation Network that has received testimonies from over 40 countries where peoples are in extreme conflict - either wars of people or desparate poverty or both. Dr Shamis is a lady who firstly will tell you stories determined to break down any stereotypes you may hold of her country, the Muslim faith, the culture that women represent in those contexts. The ordinary people of Somalia have far too many pressing challenges to want to do anything other than love people from other nations, assuming that trust is not going to be overtly betrayed.Dr Shamis has been known to break through even the most hardened journalistic broadcast debates with deeper truths than the other participants appeared to want to be discussed. If you listen deeper, then what may emerge is a tragic picture: Somalia is in effect a country without any (recognised) government, with its people lack of almost every infrastructure, ignored more or less wherever all other nations meet. Clearly the details and the problems - should you be interested- need careful listening to and contextual care.

These are projects from African women's only Nobel peace laureate: WANGARI MAATHAI, Greenbelt Movement

Environmental Conservation/Tree Planting:
Since 1977, GBM has led a nationwide campaign to conserve local biodiversity, enhance natural beauty and prevent soil erosion. Experts say that a forest cover of 10% is required for a country to sustain life naturally - availability of rain, availability of underground water, soil fertility, and clean air and prevention of soil erosion and beauty. At present Kenya's forest cover is less than 2%. The GBM is therefore fully engaged in the campaign, promoting the planting of indigenous trees in forest catchment areas, private farms and public spaces to preserve local biological diversity. The GBM strategy is based on a ten-step procedure that culminates in the purchase of seedlings by GBM from groups. The groups benefit from the income generated through the sale of their seedlings, and the goal towards reforestation is advanced.
In Muthetheni division of Machakos District, a water-harvesting project has been initiated to support conservation and food security activities in the area. In this semi-arid area, water is abundant at some times of the year and completely lacking in others. As a result GBM in collaboration with the Embassy of Germany, has piloted the construction of sand dams to capture water during rainy seasons. More>>

Recognizing the need to strengthen civil society's concern for the environment, GBM established a pilot civic education and advocacy project to raise public awareness on the need to protect the environment and be active participants in the political process by voting. Through seminars offered at the GBM Learning Center in Nairobi, participants have received information on good governance, culture & the environment, advocacy and environmental justice since 1992. Most seminars involve resource persons conversant with the linkages between poor governance, bottlenecks to development and the environment. Advocacy activities within GBM began in the late 1980s when gross mismanagement and abuse of the environment was tolerated by the government. The projects of Global Reconciliation Network 1 2 - one of our collaboration favourites because it connects the highest trust we have so far found in the medical world and by youth - are hard to classify because they proactively respond to wherever the biggest crises for humanity keep recurring

Giraffe was founded by Anne Medlock.Since 1984, the Giraffe Project has designated more than 900 Giraffes, awarding certificates to the Giraffes and placing their stories in hundreds of local and national print and broadcast media. Giraffes, ranging from 7- to 97-year-olds, take on pollution, homelessness, corporate unethical practices, illness, drug and alcohol abuse, and a host of other issues. They have risked rejection, jail, and peer ridicule. “Real, life-serving change gets fixed in the social fabric by thousands of ordinary people doing what is, for them, extraordinary stretching. We want to stop people from acting like ostriches.” The organization’s latest project is The Heroes Program, a story-based K-12 curriculum that teaches courageous compassion and active citizenship.
Ann is grateful for the opportunity to gather all of her life skills into one project for service. “I am very concerned about the health of the body politic. I think we’re like that frog who’s been dropped in water that’s slowly getting hotter and hotter, but can’t register that it’s boiling to death. We’ve been absorbing social and political toxins for so long that we’re losing sight of the fact that we’re being poisoned. We need some antidotes, quick, and the way to offer them is to use media, which are the most powerful distribution avenues that have ever existed in humanity. Look at all of the ways now that we have to pass along information and ideas and concepts to people. We’ve allowed these avenues to be filled up with garbage, but the avenues themselves are still excellent. If we begin loading these avenues to people’s hearts and minds with real life stories that are healing and antidotal, we can recover our health as a society.”
Ann believes service is imperative at this point in our culture’s history. “Compassionate service is the cornerstone of every spiritual tradition. Anybody can see that rampant greed and personal aggrandizement are putting us in a very bad place. If you are concerned about the fact that our kids are killing themselves and each other, with drugs, with violence, with bulimia, doing things that destroy the possibilities of their own futures, you have to realize that. Our children are turning away from us in any way they can because they see that what this society is offering them is meaningless. We have to create a society that has meaning, and that offers our kids meaningful lives.”
Ann, now 66, wakes up grateful each day for her work, which takes place in a small house on Whidbey Island, a short ferry ride from Seattle. She and her husband, Executive Director John Graham, spend a typical day creating a curricula for high school students called The Giraffe Heroes Program, working with her staff of six full-time employees, writing profiles of new Giraffes for the media, fund-raising, fielding emails, screening nominations for new Giraffes, working with editors, producers and writers who are looking for stories, and having ongoing conversations with a nationwide network of character educators.

I have spent about 4 hours listening to her life future history. It amazes me. She has developed one of the deepest conflict resolution methods .. she spends most of her spare time travelling around Africa's parentless children working out what education can be communaly developed for them. Africa has many such communities at the edge of destruction due to Aids. Myrna cares because when she was abou5 she had to fend for herself a lot due to a family tragedy. I am not a conflict reslotion facilitator myself but I have experienced most of the approaches recommended to me by the CR and risk prevention communities. There is nobody I would trust deeper conflict resolution projects to than Myrna. However, conflict resolution faciliation often needs many interfacing approaches if a huge human relations system needs turning round, and Myrna recognises the need to collaborate with all other providers of systemic methods to make sure that timing and context are worked through with the deepest of love and care.

The Cooperation runs a 60 minutes circle/cafe having invited participants from every concern network we can find in a city

Its free to participate in but everyone is asked to agree what change network they love being in most, and whether they will happily be a guide round the network for anyone at the meeting who wants to connect. So we get grid pages like the one above (click to enlarge). Then we note how many times the same networks come up from one club of city to another as well as collect feedback on how well people feel the network spends their volunteer time, what's its unique competence is, how it interfaces with other nets... and so on

Why the connections between humanity networks always matter more to me than the networks themselves however messy this may make cataloguing of gravity 200

It was probably in 2000 that I first doscovered the experience of open space. Invite people - however many, however conflicted - around one purpose to be with each other for 3 days and 2 nights; and whatever the challenge you wil;l make simultaneous progress in which everyone can participate to their hearts delights and knowl everyone else is watching over them. I thought I still do feel , you haven't lived if you haven't experienced this method once. Every scholling should try it.

And I also though that method and its 10000 alumni networks - now 25 years young, 100 countries, 50000 three-day context events - might suffice to spin 30000 projevcts through peoples of the world. In this I erred. For example whilst open space may be at the centre of every inquiry into what humanity means in particular communities, it need opther conflict resolving and relentless human trusting approaches to sustain both projects through time and the cataloguing of them. Some of the methods and networks I have since discovered that ssytemically interface with open space - and no true system method works without collaborating with other system methods and open networks are:
Deep Democracy
Every truly practicing practice of Gandhi, and all other approaches that co-create circles of being - eg the Quakers
Global Reconciliation's listening loops involving the hig and the mighty with the deepest in a community's grassroots; involving the most expensive professions like doctors with the most undervalued heroines like Theresas

You may get the picture- the more you love one network for humanity, the more you also need to ask what other networks are worthy of so much human time and passion; and how do we travel across their borders and multiply their goodwill impacts for all

Why could Open Space people be particularly interested?

...AS well as working as the local hub and community meeting place for people who are have grassroots community-up innovations to space, catcomm has developed the virtual infrastructure to catalogue collaboration projects from any society that are ready to be replicated across orther societies facing the same challenge. I have always thought that quite a large number of open space activations are missing the trick of replicating what one community learns across other facing similar challenges. To achieve this perhaps one of the deeper dynamics needed is to review those open spaces that their facilitation clients want worldwide propagation for from several lenses. Conflict resolving initiatives of most interest to people in S America may have a different pattern from those that interest social chnage agents in USA and so on. WE can only see the practical patterns of this by iteratively championing local translations of social bariiers as well as cataloguing stories form all around the world of open space. Perhaps one day we could dream that every media organisation had an open space correspondent as well as the 50 less interesting to me correspondents that most newspapers or tv stations field.
I feel there is a multiplicative bridge between catcomm and open space but perhaps we will only discover all the practical ways of making the most of catcomm and oopen space worlds if a few people take out a pledge and then start cataloguing which of the open spaces they know of also want to be replicated to any community facing a similar conflict barrier.

Back in London Queen Elisabeth has turned into a social activist. In her annual Christmas message she asked every Briton to debate whether the evidence of 2005 is that "humanity is turning against itself" and if they conclude so: to adopt one way of intervening in 2006. Sounds like catalytic community project hosts and open space agents will have a very demanding year.

BACKGROUND
Our World is divided and conflict-torn, socially and ecologically unsustainable. We cannot remain as we are, nor can we go back to the conditions of the past. We can only move forward, but not on the same path we have been following till now. We need to find a new direction for our individual and collective future in individual and collective interest. Finding a new path is a major challenge, but it can be met.
The Global Symposium therefore aims to meet these challenges and its main objectives are to:
foster personal interaction, understanding and action for a strong foundation of a nuclear-free, democratic, sustainable, just and peaceful world order by bringing together Nobel Laureates, youth working towards world unity & world peace, international institutions, civil society organizations, and global and local leaders.
create a widespread awareness about issues like scarcity of safe drinking water, reform of governmental and corporate structures, more equitable distribution of resources, development of renewable energy programs and encourage dialogue to replace international conflict for achieving a breakthrough towards a sustainable future.
assemble the innovative ideas and creative experiences of non-governmental and international organizations and all sectors of civil society and articulate a vision for the future that recognizes the fundamental interdependence of humanity and suggests ways to move forward towards a New World Order.
draft a joint declaration approved unanimously (or by majority) in order to create a guideline for a joint action plan. The various teams in the Symposium will work together to draft a declaration to save the Future of the Earth, the Future of the Humanity and the Future of Oneself (individuals).
act on all these suggestions above and constitute a BREAKTHROUGH 2007 team. BREAKTHROUGH 2007 team will be constituted as a group of active youth thinkers who will come together at Global Symposium in December 2005 and through joint effort, coordination and networking will endeavour to awaken planetary consciousness for a New World Order.
The Global Symposium is an ongoing project that aims to develop global partnership with youth and civil society organizations to establish sustainable development, world unity and peace. The various teams in the Symposium worked together to draft a declaration and work on an action plan to save the Future of the Earth, Humanity and the Future of Oneself.
ACTION PLAN
Moving towards New World Order:
1) The 2005 Global Symposium resulted in a draft declaration to create a joint action plan for establishing Breakthrough 2007 team and 15 Regional Chapters that will develop Regional Partnership Agenda (RPA) identifying regional threats and challenges to be met. This draft declaration is being circulated to the partners of GPWD for their inputs.
2) In 2006, we aim to establish 15 Regional Chapters worldwide that will work upon the Regional Partnership Agenda (RPA) and will organize Conferences during 2006-2007 across the globe. A reference document will be drawn on the conceptual and methodological basis from the standpoint of civil society. This reference document will be known as the Global Partnership Agenda (GPA), which will evolve during the regional conferences to address regional and global problems, their solutions and action plan. We are inviting proposal from organizations to serve as Regional initiators in the following 15 regions of the world, namely: 1) Eastern & Central Africa, 2) Southern Africa, 3) West Africa, 4) Latin America & the Caribbean, 5) North America, 6) South Asia, 7) The Pacific, 8) Southeast Asia, 9) Northeast Asia, 10) Central Asia, 11) Middle East and North Africa, 12) Western Commonwealth of Independent States, 13) The Caucasus, 14) The Balkans, 15) Northern and Western Europe
3) The Regional Conferences will conclude with a Global Conference resulting in wide acceptance of the Global Partnership Agenda. A Global Action Plan (GAP) will be drawn based on the Global Partnership Agenda and will be presented to the UN Secretary General and all Heads of State & Government with a petition to convene a Global Meeting.
4) A Global Meeting based on Article 109 of the UN Charter at United Nations Headquarters will further result in commitments from civil society organizations to get the GAP endorsed and acted upon by all Governments, Corporate bodies, civil societies and individuals. We aim to hold this meeting sometime from January and March 2008.
BREAKTHROUGH 2007:
To achieve a sustainable future, we need a new way of thinking that can make a difference. The shape of tomorrow will be decided by how we think today. BREAKTHROUGH 2007 team has been constituted as a group of active youthful thinkers who came together at Global Symposium in December 2005 and through joint effort, coordination and networking will endeavor to awaken planetary consciousness for a New World Order by December 2007. Those who couldn't join the Breakthrough 2007 earlier, may still do so by registering themselves at www.gpwd.org
The Breakthrough 2007 team will keep expanding in terms of numbers as well as space around the world so as to awaken the planetary consciousness involving all sections of the society to build global public opinion as well as global action for a united, peaceful and just world order.

As the metaphor of energy has been used to suggest backing for CCs let's use that to describe the aim of debate about CCs to be: Produce as much LIGHT as HEAT!

So to some specific comments:

Two questions to bear in mind as we progress:
* What can we describe about the facts of how CCs ARE in practice at the moment - summarise our experiences of them?

* What can we imagine that CCs MAY BE in the future? Hence the evolving Emergency Currency proposal and the DESIGN PROCESS for CCs we have been discovering.

Then let me describe our take here at WICC on the 3 stage process of learning about CCs proposed by Andrius:
1. TAKING A STAND (PRINCIPLES)
So for time currencies we articulate four Core Values (after Edgar Cahn):
* People as Assets
* Redefining Work
* Reciprocity
* Social Capital
We make it clear that for these values to mean anything they must be turned into a set of Practice Principles which we articulate thus:
* We treat people as assets
* We value the work people are willing to do
* We give everyone the opportunity both to give and to receive
* We create the conditions for healthy social networks to flourish.

2. FOLLOWING THROUGH (PATTERNS)
We have identified a set of DESIGN FEATURES leading to a set of DESIGN CHOICES for CCs:

These are PATTERNS we have observed from the practice of CCs to date. We need to further develop these insights together by those with experience of CCs contributing what they know about these patterns.

3. REFLECTING (OUTCOMES)
We have discovered lots of things from practice of LETS/Time Banks and other CCs from which we all need to learn. Hence our development of the DESIGN TOOL and our specific innovations in time banking here in Wales.

SO, how can we apply the above Principles and Processes to this idea of EMERGENCY currency?

First, the idea itself may need interrogating.

In the early 30s, after the 1929 crash, a number of so-called 'emergency currencies' emerged in Austria (Worgl), Germany and the US. All of them were closed down by central banks and governments. Bernard Lietaer has commented that this generation must not make the same mistake. In fact, America's leading 'right leaning' economist of the time, Irwin Fisher went on record as saying that 'local stamp scrip could get the US out of Depression in 3 weeks' but Roosevelt ignored him and went for the centralised New Deal solution instead.

In Argentina, after the collapse of the national currency a few years back, local barter markets and regional currencies were in great demand - these may also be described as 'emergency currencies'.

LETS and Time Dollars/Time Banks are also 'emergency currencies' in the sense that they are different responses to the same 'slow emergency' of the breakdown of communities and environments and lack of local liquidity because of the 'externalities' that the global market economy dumps on them and the fluctuations of the so-called 'business cycle' and the pernicious daily speculations of the Casino Economy which can seriously depress or collapse national currencies overnight (George Soros and the UK pound in the early 90s, Thailand in the late 90s etc.) It is this ongoing, daily, global, slow emergency that informs our work rather than the more sensational idea of particular, dramatic emergencies, in which, as has been pointed out, a CC may not be possible anyway due to lack of infrastructure through which to organise.

Coming to the feared flu pandemic the conversation reminds me a little of 1999 and Y2K - remember that?
Everyone was told to stock up and head for the hills because civilisation was going to collapse for the lack of a computer digit at midnight on 31st December 1999. Nothing happened.
I am sure a lot of computer specialists will tell me that because people had been preparing for years then systems were changed and adapted and so the anticipated collapse did not occur, hence the professionals were proved right.

Whatever, the truth or not of that case, let's assume that a pandemic may occur and let's ask what we can do to help communities protect themselves with CCs.

Let's take our four Practice Principles then and apply them to the design of an Emergency Currency that will provide optimum protection.

* We treat people as assets
Let's make an inventory or directory of all the things people might offer people in a given community during an emergency (using the list from Sarajevo as a starter?)

* We value the work people are willing to do
Let's decide what everyone's work is worth in an emergency. Do we want to preserve differentials when people are starving? Lots of black markets flourish in emergencies and some people exploit everyone else to do very well out of them.

* We give everyone the opportunity both to give and to receive
Let's make sure there will be a balance between givers and takers by the way we design the currency.

* We create the conditions for healthy social networks to flourish.
Let's make sure that the currency keeps active networks alive througout an emergency.

Finally, why don't we each look at the DESIGN TOOL and apply each one of its features to such a design.
We could then compare our results and see any patterns emerging.

Maybe Andrius can configure the existing one so that we can see clearly the effects of each choice in an emergency situation?
